Magund Cragrender

Magund Cragrender is a gnomish engineer who ran the Black Steel Tovar during the Red River War. He lives in Polance Manor, a moderately-sized villa on the eastern edge of Tessendra, and runs the Shining Stone Library.

Description

Magund is a small, elderly gnome. He is 579, considerably beyond the average life expectancy of a gnome, but wears his age well. He walks slowly with a limp, the result of an accident during testing a weapon during his earlier years. He carries an ironwood cane. He has a warm and quiet demeanor, preferring to listen instead of speaking. He is generous with his wealth and resists any recommendation to be more frugal or invest it.

Personal Life

Magund as born in 4053. He was married once, to Daisy Vexill. They had two sons, Richard and Karn, before Daisy fell ill and died in 4329. Karn was drafted into the army during the Red River War and died on the front lines. Richard blames his father for Karn's death, as the Black Steel Tovar was instrumental in pushing Yarsell to war, and the two have had a hostile relationship since. While he initially disavowed any responsibility for Karn's death or the war, he has accepted his share of the blame and made peace with it. He wants nothing more than to make amends with Richard before his death.

Notable work

Beyond founding the Shining Stone Library and leading Black Steel Tovar, Magund has many achievements. He was an accomplished engineer and inventor, with multiple patents in the area of siege weapons and mechanical computers.

He is credited with the invention of the transducer bomb, an achievement he has come to regret. In a 4604 he told a colleague in a letter "It is an act of immeasurable luck that our prototype was destroyed. If I had foreseen the potential within the machine, I would have taken a hammer to it myself."
